Two sketches I did today using a blue Pigma Brush pen. In the first drawing the clouds look a little too solid and lumpy. I think the second is the more successful of the two. Might use these as the basis of a monoprint.

]]> #drawingaugust is a challenge issued by Jean Stevens to draw one drawing for every day in August and post it to Twitter. See Drawing August. I signed up for the challenge, figuring this would get me back into the rhythm of drawing regularly. Of course August first rolls around and I’m way, way busy. At 11:45pm I’m frantically sketching away on a timed 10 minute sketch. Snapped a picture of it and tweeted it on time though.

]]> Here are the results of my forth week of figure drawing practice. When I started my lunch sketching project its purpose was to help accomplish one of my goals for this year; focus on Figure drawing proportion.

The problem is that when I set that particular artistic goal I didn’t think too long upon it. It’s a crappy goal. Conventional Internet Wisdom (TM) and an authority no less than Wikipedia tells me so.

I’m told that goals should be SMART:

  • S = Specific
  • M = Measurable
  • A = Attainable
  • R = Realistic
  • T = Timely

I’m pretty sure my vaguely worded goal only satisfies Timely, as I had given myself a one year time period. More thought required.

Here then are the meager results of this week’s lunchtime sketch. It was a bad week and the drawings reflect that.

I spent so much time worrying about the height of the figure in this sketch I used up my budgeted 5 minutes of drawing time. You can see the vertical tick marks that I was using to keep the figure in proportion. The distance between each tick is the same as the length of the figure’s head.

After my failure from the previous day I jumped into this sketch without fussing over measuring the source figure. I was pleased with myself and the outcome. It’s a passable little sketch and I can’t see any problems until I compare it next to the original.

Still flush and pleased with my success from the previus day, I jumped into sketching again without continuously measuring my sketch against the source figure. The results were not pretty. Lesson learned; I’m not ready to “wing it” quite yet. More practice required.
